Computex 2011: Summary of AMD Press Event

Zambezi will be the last pure CPU processor from AMD.
  • Start from Trinity, which is estimated to be available in year 2012, AMD will switch to all APU architeture.
  • In APU platform, Radeon GPU will be implemented in full with no compromise due to integration.
  • With regard to SLI support in 9 series, since NVIDIA did not give AMD the authorization to implement SLI, main boards with both 9-series chipset and SLI were done by manufacturers who have separate arrangements with NVIDIA to implement SLI on main boards with AMD chipsets.
  • One of the new development goal for AMD is to deliver up to eight hours of battery life. The current C-series and E-series have already achieved this goal, and Llano-based A-series too is designed with same goal in mind.
  • At the moment, Bulldozer-based FX-series will not be used for notebook platform. No comments on Trinity in this regard since its still under development.
  • The 'special' version of C-50 APU for tablet is now officially renamed to Z-series APU. The main changes would be slowest clock speed is now lower to 650MHz and fastest clock speed remain unchanged at 1GHz, with TDP somewhere below 6.5W.
  • With regard to the lack of native support USB 3.0, AMD believes the products for high-end market, such as those which use 9-series chipset, are less concerned with the additional cost of adding an extra chip for USB 3.0, therefore they will start native USB 3.0 support in chipsets for general market before introducing native USB 3.0 to the next generation high-end platform.
  • AMD Hybrid CrossFire technology is now renamed to 'Dual Graphics' for APU platform. Available to both desktops and notebooks, the new Dual Graphics, will now truly combines processor power of both shared and dedicated graphics processing modules. And in addition to software selection, it will now feature on notebook platform, detection mechanism which would enable/disable dedicated graphics processing depend on whether power adaptor is attached or not.

Before any end-user product using AMD's 'Llano' APU hit the market, the eager AMD senior VP Rick Gergman is already showing off their engineering sample for next generation AMD APU. Codename 'Trinity', this APU will be based on Bulldozer architecture, and is expected to be released in 2012.

Computex 2011: AMD have shifted their focus to APU products based on SoC concept

by Computex.biz June 02, 2011 11:44

Although in recent years, AMD have shifted their focus to APU products based on SoC concept, the new FX-series CPU, 'Bulldozer', which claimed to have spend five years in development, still attracts many attentions from consumer who eagerly awaits its arrival. However, instead of the much anticipated official release of new FX-series processors, on this year's Computex, AMD only announced that main boards with 9-series chipset, which is meant for accompanying the new FX-series processor, is now available for mass market. As for the new FX-series processors, it won't be available until sometime in Q3 this year.

So, without the all-new processors, consumers are now facing a dilemma of resorting to use their old processors on main boards with new 9-series chipset for the moment. As for the key features of 9-series chipsets, it's all about faster I/O, which includes support for SATA 6Gb, support for multiple RAID configuration, support for up to 4 GPUs with CrossFireX technology, and some manufacturers even includes support for SLI from NVidia.
