Computer 2011: MIPS-based Smart STB

by Computex.biz June 04, 2011 10:36

In addition to low-cost MIPS-based Android smartphone, in this year's Computex, MIPS also showcases their smart STB (Set-top Box). Each of the two STP on display have their own special features. The first STB focus on remote control via wireless LAN. Users can use their tablet or smartphone to remotely control STB by wireless LAN.

The second STB focus on its capacity to run Adobe Air, Flash and HTML5 application. The capacity to run Adobe Air especially, is something that other smart STB lacks at the moment. However, in the future, all standard Google TV will be able to install all apps from Android Market, MIPS would require more willing developers to participate in their own application market to leverage their chance of success.

Computex 2011: Qualcomm have showcased many devices based on its third generation Snapdragon processors

by Computex.biz June 02, 2011 12:52

Qualcomm have showcased many devices based on its third generation Snapdragon processors today. Out of the lot, there was one Acer Iconia tab series phone which looks like the one with 21:9 aspect ratio screen that Acer announced back in February. Although all phones on display have their model numbers marked out, with some help from photo editors, one can make out this phone should be Iconia tab A5, the next-in-line for Iconia Smart series, which features a dual-core MSM8260 processor with ARMv7 instruction set.

On top of dual-core architecture, by default, all third generation Snapdragon will have the capacity to hardware accelerate 3D display, 1080p video playback and burst mode for camera to take continuous photos up to 5 shots.

Also on display was the demonstration of Qualcomm Atheros WiFi Display. Sourced from recently acquired Atheros, it technology is capable of transferring image displayed on one device to any other video displays capable of receiving it via WiFi Direct protocol. The major point of distinction between this and Intel's WiDi is that a receiver box would not be required, and since this technology only involves changes in software layer, so a upgrade to include support for this technology may merely involves a driver or firmware update to wireless NICs. However, since Intel dominates wireless chipset market for current notebooks, and support from television manufacturers would be essential to its success, how well this good concept fares in the market would be something yet to be seem.

Computex 2011: AMD have shifted their focus to APU products based on SoC concept

by Computex.biz June 02, 2011 11:44

Although in recent years, AMD have shifted their focus to APU products based on SoC concept, the new FX-series CPU, 'Bulldozer', which claimed to have spend five years in development, still attracts many attentions from consumer who eagerly awaits its arrival. However, instead of the much anticipated official release of new FX-series processors, on this year's Computex, AMD only announced that main boards with 9-series chipset, which is meant for accompanying the new FX-series processor, is now available for mass market. As for the new FX-series processors, it won't be available until sometime in Q3 this year.

So, without the all-new processors, consumers are now facing a dilemma of resorting to use their old processors on main boards with new 9-series chipset for the moment. As for the key features of 9-series chipsets, it's all about faster I/O, which includes support for SATA 6Gb, support for multiple RAID configuration, support for up to 4 GPUs with CrossFireX technology, and some manufacturers even includes support for SLI from NVidia.
